Enjoining the good and forbidding the evil

Whoever among you sees evil should change it with his hand. If he is unable to do so, then with his tongue. If he is unable to do so, then with his heart and that is the weakest level of faith.  [Sahih Muslim: 49]

“Whoever joins himself (to another) in a good cause shall have a share of it, and whoever joins himself (to another) in an evil cause shall have the responsibility of it, and Allah controls all things.” [Al- Quran 4:85]

“And (as for) the believing men and the believing women, they are guardians of each other; they enjoin good and forbid evil and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger; (as for) these, Allah will show mercy to them; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.” [Al- Quran 9:71]

“The hypocritical men and the hypocritical women are all alike; they enjoin evil and forbid good and withhold their hands; they have forsaken Allah, so He has forsaken them; surely the hypocrites are the transgressors.” [Al- Quran 9:67]

“And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.”  [Al- Quran 3:104]

[And Luqman said]“O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” [Al- Quran 31:17]

This is useful advice which Allah tells us that prophet Luqman gave, so that people may follow it and take it as a good example. Offer the prayer properly at the appointed times. Enjoin the good, and forbid the evil to the best of your ability and strength. Luqman  (PBUH) knew that whoever enjoins what is good and forbids what is evil, will inevitably encounter harm and annoyance from people, so he told him to be patient. Being patient when people cause harm or annoyance is one of the most important commandments. [Tafseer Ibn Kathir]

“And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, “For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.” [Al-Quran 28:55]

“And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.” [Al-Quran 41:34]
